AL SILAHDAR MOSQUE
The Suleiman Aga al-Silahdar Mosque is one of the finest mosques in Cairo and is characterized by its unique style, which reflects the combination of the Ottoman Baroque and local Cariene styles. The mosque was built in 1839 and is located on Mu'iz Street in Cairo in the direction to Bab El Futuh.
The mosque was built in the reign of Prince Suleiman Aga al-Silahdar, an aide to Muhammad Ali lieutenants.
The mosque is known by its pencil-like minaret, a long and thin Ottoman-style structure. The mosque design includes both the direction of the inner Qiblah and the current context of the street by gradually increasing the thickness of the street wall, a modification technique first used in the Al-Aqmar mosque.
The mosque is rectangular in shape, divided into two squares. The western square houses the mosque's campus. It is a Sahn surrounded by arcades covered by shallow domes. This mosque is covered by a wooden roof with a hole in the middle for ventilation and lighting. East Square has a prayer place covered with a wooden ceiling adorned with various drawings and decorations.
