Aswan Fatimid Cemetery
Aswan Fatimid Cemetery is a Muslim landmark in Aswan, located on Airport Road, 10 minutes from Aswan Corniche over a small hill, behind the Nubia Museum.
These tombs date back to the stages of Egypt's Islamic conquest in 21 A.H, some of which date back to the ninth century AD, and are characterized by their unique architectural style.
The cemetery originally housed 80 cemeteries, of which 30 still exist so far, while the rest was lost because of the fragile materials - mud bricks - used to build the cemeteries.
Tombs in the cemetery are very attractive; the domes were built on a cylinder style with angles that stand out like horns, a unique feature in southern Egypt.
There were some inscriptions in the tombs but they were removed after an extraordinary rainstorm in the late 19th century, and therefore Egyptologists cannot know what was written, so it is impossible until today to rebuild the origin of each building, and the dates and names of the owners of the tombs have been lost forever.
