Saint Simon Monastery
Be overwhelmed with enthusiasm for a tour to the monastery of St. Simeon, take the opportunity to see it, which is located near the mausoleum of the Aga Khan on the western main land of Aswan, and is also located on the southern tip of Elephantine Island. Known as the monastery of Anba Hatre, with White Bird Travel you will see more than one place to visit.
The monastery was founded in the seventh century, but was destroyed, and reconstructed in its present form in the tenth century, devoted to St. Simeon.
Hence the monks travelled to Nubia, hoping to convert the Nubians to Christianity.
The monastery consists of two levels, the lower level is built of stone, while the upper level is built of mud bricks, and its walls are 10 meters tall, giving it the shape of the military castle.
In the ancient times, the monastery had up to 300 monks and could have received up to 100 pilgrims simultaneously, but was partially destroyed by Salah Al-Din's Ayubi forces in 1173.
Most of the existing buildings were added to the monastery as a kind of expansion, renovation and reconstruction of the old monastery's original building.
