The Nile River and its tributaries, the White Nile and Blue Nile, pass through 10 countries, namely Tanzania, Kenya, Zaire, Burundi, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Uganda, Sudan and finally Egypt and the length of the river. It reaches 6,690 kilometers with its influx in the Mediterranean.
The source of the Nile River is Lake Victoria, and in the north of this lake there are small waterfalls called Ripon Falls in Uganda. The Nile River is the first source of irrigation in Egypt, because of its annual flood, it also enriches the surrounding soil with rich nutrients, making the soil extremely fertile which made Egypt the breadbasket of the world in ancient times, and so Herodotus said that "Egypt is the gift of the Nile."
The River Nile overflows every year between June and September, which is why the ancient Egyptians called the river "Ar" or "Aur" meaning black, because of the color of the sediment that remains after the annual river flood.
The ancient Egyptians revered the inundation of the Nile and represented it as a god called Hapi, the god of floods.
Most of the great tourist attractions are located on the banks of the Great Nile such as the Karnak Temple, the Temple of Abu Simple and the Temple of Kalabsha and you can enjoy visiting them on board Nile cruises.
