New Kingdom Necropolis

The cemetery of the New Kingdom is located in Saqqara, dating back to the ages of early families. It is located south of King Zoser’s complex, east of Sekhemkhet compound.

King Hormoheb cemetery:

The cemetery was built by Hormoheb before his accession to the throne following the death of Tutankhamen. It was constructed in three phases, likely reflecting the rise of Hormoheb power, as Hormoheb built a second cemetery in the Valley of the Kings of Thebes. The superstructure of Hormoheb Cemetery is about 65 meters long and 20 meters wide, and the excavators found Hormoheb Cemetery in 1975, which is like many cemeteries in Memphis, consisting of a first pylon, a forecourt, a second pylon, an outer courtyard, and a statue room surrounded by two storerooms, an inner courtyard and three offering chapels.

Maya and Merritt's tomb:

Maya was a treasury supervisor and worked under King Tutankhamen. This cemetery was discovered in 1987 in Saqqara. When Tutankhamen died, Maya was responsible for the royal burial, which contained objects inscribed with his name. His wife Merritt had died before him, and since the couple only had two daughters, the funeral was chaired by Maya Nahuher half-brother.

Ramose cemetery:

Ramos was a contemporary of Hormoheb and held the title of force commander and deputy army. He owed the privilege of burying him next to his master for that trusted post. The cemetery originally consists of an outer courtyard, after which an inner courtyard has a shaft to the lower gallery, all the walls are built of mud bricks, there are no towers but instead of the gates the gateways have westward returns for the walls to look thicker.

The tomb of Tia and Tia:

The man Tia was the supervisor of the Treasury during the reign of King Ramses II, and the woman Tia was the sister of Ramses II. The location of the cemetery is important: it was constructed on the north side beside the Hormoheb Memorial, because the latter was considered the founder of the ruling family. The western wall of this courtyard has the entrance, a deep shaft leading to the burial chambers below.
